Review
The FastFWD label releases another outstanding soulful house project in John Beltran’s “I See You.” A noted songwriter, Michigan-based producer John Beltran is best known for his earlier work with Ubiquity and Om records, and experimenting in techno to broken beat genres but always in a hard-to-categorize zone of his own. With « I See You » Beltran doesn’t disappoint as he lends airy, sexy vocals on top of a bouncy soulful vibe and groovy percussion. Brilliant stuff.
Fellow Michiganian Jeremy Ellis (AKA Ayro) provides the NuJazz Remix which is smooth enough to serve as background ear libation for the lounge scene or pose as a bass bin shaker for the club. It’s not too far from the original but is indeed kicked up just enough, partly due to Ellis’ added saucy rhodes soloing. Next, Rob Slac from Chillin Music lends his spacey, deep feel to his version, taking the listener on a whimsical journey through sounds. Its sly beats, looped hooks, and galloping bass line will sublimely work club systems. Rounding out the selection of remixes is a rework by FastFWD’s own Sandman and Riverside that offers a different spin from the previous cuts. It uses layers of percussion and keys to create an effective build for the dancefloor while still maintaining the character of the original. The use of a ’stand-up’ style bass underneath it all moves the track into a wonderfully jazzy territory. All-in-all, another exceptional package from FastFWD.
